Directions to Our Practice
If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take, with the Marilyn J. Praisner Library as the starting point:
- Take Old Columbia Pike north, then merge onto Spencerville Rd. At the Columbia Pike overpass, make a U-turn onto Sandy Spring Rd, then turn left onto National Dr. We’re in that building right there on the corner, at 3915 National Dr #150.
- Still take Old Columbia Pike, but turn right onto Blackburn Rd. Then turn left onto US-29. Exit as soon as possible, then turn left onto Sandy Spring Rd and left onto National Dr, and there you are! Two more left turns around the building will bring you to our parking lot.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Burtonsville’s history dates back to colonial times when it was part of the Patuxent Hundred, later known as the Eastern Branch Hundred. This early community was home to around 100 inhabitants. On September 27, 1699, the Prince George’s County Court recorded the appointment of Thomas Wells and Thomas Pindell as overseers of Patuxent Hundred.
In the early 1700s, prominent land grants were established in the area. Neal Clark received Maiden’s Fancy, a 580-acre tract, in 1700, while Mark Richardson was granted Bear Bacon, a 600-acre plot, in 1703. Another significant landholder was Richard Snowden, an iron master who acquired numerous land patents, including Snowdens Manor in 1715, which spanned an impressive 9,265 acres, and Snowdens Mill, which covered 546 acres. These large estates were eventually divided into smaller tracts, which were rented or sold to planters and settlers.
The community of Burtonsville, originally known as Burton’s, is named after Isaac Burton, who became the primary landowner in the area after purchasing his father’s land shares in 1825. He and his wife Keturah had 17 children, many of whom remained in the area as adults. The town grew around the intersection of Old Columbia Pike and the road to Sandy Spring, and in the 1850s, Isaac Burton became the first postmaster of the new post office, which was based out of his store. Today, Burtonsville’s central area remains focused around the intersection of Maryland Route 198 and U.S. Route 29.
